Rautenbach's directorial debut, Die Kandidaat (1968), was controversial for its perceived criticism of the apartheid system and faced censorship. His other significant works include Katrina (1969) and Jannie Totsiens (1970), which are noted for their bold storytelling and social commentary. After a hiatus, he returned to filmmaking with Abraham (2015), which was well-received at the South African box office.
