British-born character actor, on stage at the Old Vic in London from 1936. Emigrated to the U.S. after World War II. Acted in plays off-Broadway from the late 40's and on television from 1951. Often seen as British authority figures, particularly politicians, aristocrats, military types and executives. Appeared on the television show Bewitched (1964) 6 times including a giant, Santa Claus, a ghost and King Henry VIII.
